Why a piano needs its own handling
The weight in a piano is unevenly distributed, and most of it sits in the iron frame and the strings. Lift it in the wrong place and the instrument takes damage even if nothing shows on the outside – and the tuning goes either way.
We use a piano trolley, straps and blankets, and there are always enough of us that the instrument never has to be balanced. On stairs we go slowly, one step at a time, with people both above and below.
What we do
- Assess the stairwell, the turns and the door widths before we start
- Wrap the instrument in blankets and secure the lid and pedals
- Carry using a piano trolley and straps, never loose in our hands
- Secure the piano upright and strapped in the van
- Put it in place where you want it at the new address
Grand pianos are dismantled – the legs and lyre pedal come off, and the instrument is laid on its side on a piano board. We do that too.
After the move
A piano should be left to settle for a few days in its new room before it is tuned, so the wood can adjust to the temperature and humidity. Place it against an internal wall if you can, not right next to a radiator or a window.

What does it cost to move a piano?
Piano transport starts at 4 500 kr incl. VAT. The final price depends on the weight, the floor and whether there is a lift. A grand is heavier and has to be dismantled, and is priced separately. Call with the make, model and floor at both ends, and you will get a price straight away.
Do you take grand pianos as well?

Can you manage stairs without a lift?
Yes, that is our everyday work in Oslo's tenement buildings. We go slowly, one step at a time, with people both above and below, and there are always enough of us that the instrument never has to be balanced. Tell us if the staircase has tight turns, so we bring the right number of people.
Is the piano insured during transport?
We hold liability insurance for the work we do. A piano or a grand is often worth more than a liability cover stretches to, so for high-value instruments we recommend that you check your own insurance, or take out a moving insurance in addition.
Does the piano need tuning afterwards?
Expect it to. The tuning usually goes regardless of how carefully the instrument is handled. Let the piano settle for a few days in its new room before you book a tuner, so the wood can adjust to the temperature and humidity.
Where should the piano stand in the new home?
Preferably against an internal wall, and not right next to a radiator or a window. Large swings in temperature and humidity are what wear the instrument down most.
